Welcome Message
Chairman
The Japan Petrochemical Industry Association(JPCA)
We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your continued understanding and generous support of the activities of the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association.
Over the past decade, the environment surrounding the petrochemical industry has undergone profound changes, ushering in a truly turbulent era. The momentum that once encouraged governments and industries worldwide to align their efforts toward greening and achieving carbon neutrality—spurred by the entry into force of the Paris Agreement—has been significantly unsettled by the rise of protectionist trade policies and heightened geopolitical risks beyond initial expectations. Most notably in recent times, heightened tensions in the Middle East have increased uncertainty surrounding the supply of raw materials, once again underscoring the reality that the petrochemical industry is inextricably linked to international politics. Forward‑looking technological innovation, supported by robust demand and high operating rates, now also faces irreversible structural shifts in the market, including the consolidation of ethylene centers across many countries.
In this challenging environment, we believe it is more important than ever to work together across borders and corporate boundaries to address shared issues. We embrace the theme of APIC2026, “United by Chemistry for a Sustainable Tomorrow,” as a reminder of the essential strengths of the chemical industry—its ability to transcend boundaries, support society, and open pathways to the future—and as an invitation to create a better tomorrow with colleagues around the world.
As we approach major milestones for 2030 and look ahead to the challenges of 2050, we shall re‑examine the role of the petrochemical industry in a sustainable society and strive to unlock its full potential. We recognize that our ability to envision a sustainable future and advance solutions through innovation is being tested at this very moment.
To achieve carbon neutrality and a circular economy, JPCA is advancing structural reforms based on a two‑phase timeline. In the first phase, we are steadily reducing greenhouse gas emissions from facilities through the rapid deployment of existing technologies, while accelerating the development of innovative technologies that enable further reductions. In the second phase, we aim to pursue the social implementation of these new technologies with persistence, turning sustainable development goals into reality.
Notably, this year marks a turning point in Japan’s carbon‑neutral policy, with the full‑scale launch of the national emissions trading system in fiscal year 2026. While this presents new challenges for industry, it also creates major opportunities by enhancing the visibility of environmental value and fostering growth in the green chemical market. Through support for the operation of this system, we will continue to promote the development of advanced environmental technologies. In addition, by utilizing cutting‑edge technologies—including AI—we are strengthening efforts to improve plant safety, accelerate technology transfer, enhance research and development, and renew or extend the life of aging facilities. Ensuring robust maintenance systems that support safe and stable operations is an urgent priority, and establishing a sustainable foundation through collaboration among industry, government, and academia is indispensable. We remain fully committed to ensuring that Japan can continue to lead the world in this field.
In a rapidly changing global environment, the role expected of the chemical industry is becoming increasingly significant. To realize a sustainable society, we must strengthen cooperation across national and corporate boundaries, bring together our technologies and expertise, and chart a steady path toward the future. We are committed to advancing these efforts and working together to build an industry that future generations can be proud of.
